The Sunday Post: .....Out Like a Lion
The Sunday Post: .....Out Like a Lion
You know how they say March is supposed to supposed to be weather-wise "In like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb"? Well, according to the weather reports, we're supposed to have a Blizzard with upto 6 inches of snow by tomorrow. Therefore, there's one of two things happening:
1: South Dakota didn't get that calendar with that cutie little saying
.... or
2: South Dakota is doing DDP Yoga!
I just finished my Mixed Tape+Red Hot Core workout for the day. Tomorrow, I'm taking March Out Like a Lion by doing Double Black Diamond+Red Hot Core.
Here are today's numbers:
Total Workout Time: 50:15(min/sec)
Average Heart Rate: 125bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 146bpm
Time in the Zone: Around 48 minutes
I've seen some people putting up stuff saying that they are getting back into it after having a few weeks/months of setback due to hard times. Believe me, I know what those sort of things can feel like! I ran into those times back in late November (which I did a Video Blog on through my ZenTwister YouTube channel).
I know when a lot of people are just starting or they are seeing a lot of positive changes, I will always Congratulate them on their Hard Work and tag it with #OwnThisDay, my homage to Living Life @ 90%. However, its harder to do that sort of thing when Life's Path has taken you to a low spot. There's was a good-sized part of me that did not want to Own That Day or be anywhere close to being positive at all!
However, this is where being positive is vital! It is that ability that allows you to step back and say "What's happening right now may really suck, but these times will not last!" This is where Owning This Day means taking that 10% of Life that pulling you down and finding a way to use that 90% to bring it back up as soon as you can! This is where you look for solutions, not focus on problems! This is where you go Out Like a Lion and Roar when you make it through!
Also, make sure you know that one of the things you have for you are people that can help you. Whether its a hand-up or a word of encouragement, they are there. That's what makes Team DDP Yoga the best Support Group out there. I've experienced this first hand. There are truly great, caring people that have been where you've been and wants to see you succeed!
In closing for today, make your last day of March Roar Like a Lion and....

The Saturday Post: Winning/Losing
The Saturday Post: Winning/Losing
So, to catch everyone up over the past couple of days....
Thursday was a Strength Builder Day. It was also Kids Judo & Karate for Morgan & I.
Here are the numbers:
Workout: Strength Builder
Total Workout Time: 40:28
Average Heart Rate: 124bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 157bpm
Time in the Zone: Around 36 minutes
Friday was an Off Day. I didn't get a lot of sleep the night before. I think with that combined with hitting the workouts a litter harder (both DDP Yoga & Dojo work), my body said it was time to step back and Breathe. I did do a Wake-Up Workout, 5 BANG Salutes, and worked on some Slow Burn Handstand Push-Ups. These work similar to regular Slow Burn Push-Ups, except I would walk my feet up the wall until I was standing on my hands. Then I would lower for 3, hold for 3, then push-up for 3. This is something I'm going to be developing over the next few months to improve my Black Crow into Handstand or even get Crocodile into Handstand.
Today (Saturday.. hence the name of the Blog, eh?) was a straight 3 1/2 hour Judo Day, along with BANG Salutes and Slow Burn Handstand Push-Ups. Since next week is our Judo Tournament (my first), we were working a lot of Ne-Waza (Groundwork), Shime-Waza & Nage-Komi (Moving Throws). We also had a Mini-Judo Tournament for the Kids Class, which Morgan won!
In these sort of things, however, I would have been just as proud of my son if he lost. The reason being that he showed patience and that he was learning from his mistakes and improving on them. That's the way we need to take every challenge in front of us.
Let me just put this out there right now. I am not going to nail each challenge. Its not that I'm not going to try and give it my best, don't get me wrong. Also, "nailing" a challenge (doing it perfectly) is not the same as completing a challenge. We all fall and make mistakes in our life. There are always going to to be obstacles, bumps in the road, things that trip us up. The important thing is to learn from those bumps & "losses" in our life. Own This Day is not just about Celebrating The Wins. Its also about Learning From the Setbacks and lmove forward stronger than you were before.
Success is not always going to be pretty. Fortunately, it doesn't need to be! If I move in on my opponent in Judo, I may not execute the perfect Throw. I may be Thrown Down, Pinned Down, Choked Out, Arm Barred. What I will not do... is Give Up. All of those things are not Losses. They are Learning Opportunities on how to Counter, Perform Better & Be In Control.
The same goes for doing DDP Yoga & keeping to whatever Nutrition Program you set yourself towards. I don't do "Cheat Days" because to me, its the same as Planning to Lose. However, if I fall and eat something I shouldn't, I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I learn how I got into that situation, then work on how I can deal with it better next time. If I miss a workout, I don't just throw my hands up and lay on the couch. I look at why, make the right adjustments, then get on the mat and Bang It Out!

Wednesday's Blog: Goals, Past & Future
Wednesday's Blog: Goals, Past & Future
So, as most of you that see my stuff on Facebook saw, I pulled through the Ironman Challenge I set for myself by doing Disc 3 & 4 (Wake Up, Stand Up, Strength Builder, Red Hot Core, Mixed Tape, Double Black Diamond, then Red Hot Core again) on Monday and Disc 1 & 2 (Breathing, Diamond Dozen, Energy, Fat Burner, Red Hot Core, Below the Belt, Diamond Cutter, then Red Hot Core again) on Tuesday.
Here are the Numbers:
Monday - Ironman Disc 3 & 4
Total Workout Time: 3:25(hr/min)
Average Heart Rate:121bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 162bpm
Time in Zone: Around 3:06(hr/min)
Tuesday: Ironman Disc 1 & 2
Total Workout Time: 2:32(hr/min)
Average Heart Rate:121bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 144bpm
Time in Zone: Around 2:20(hr/min)
Today (which seems almost slack by comparison) was Stand Up (no Red Hot Core today, since today was also a good 1 1/2 hours are Judo, working Throws & Groundwork combos, along with Running, 25 Push Ups, 20 Sit-Ups & Ukemi).
Here are today's Numbers:
Wednesday: Stand Up
Total Workout Time: 30:16(min/sec)
Average Heart Rate:124bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 146bpm
Time in Zone: Around 25 minutes
So today's DDP Radio was all about Goals for the Summer. One of my big goals that I've been talking about is getting DDP Yoga Certification going. As I've said on previous writings, I'm on track to officially start Certification by April 22nd. As far as completing Certification, my goal is by mid-July. I am also going to be helping Mike Stroeh with his Level 1 Certification Video, once our schedules mesh.
That's the one thing to keep looking for... Goals. Everyone that starts DDP Yoga has the Goals to start with (lose X number of pounds). However, once you hit that Goal Weight, most people spin in neutral a bit. There's nothing to drive them forward. For me, once I hit my 185lbs goal, it was like "Okay. Now what?!?"
Fortunately, I also have my Martial Arts stuff to incorporate into my DDP Yoga, so one feeds off of the other. Others, like Liz Collins & Christina Russell (aka The HardCore Sisters) take to running in 5K, 10Ks or even Marathons, along with getting that DDP Yoga Certification and helping others achieve their goals.
The Bottom Line is, once you hit one Goal, don't just settle. Look for how much further you can take it. Like DDP says "There's always some place you can go!"
Keep reaching for new Goals, and you will.....

Saturday's Post: Theory & Pratice
Just finished my Training Saturday Day. Today was 3 1/2 hours of Judo with some good Randori (practice sparring), followed by Below The Belt + Red Hot Core. What made it better was having my son (Morgan) with me keeping up with the training. He's not doing the DDP Yoga workouts right now (other than the positions I sneak in when we're doing Warm-Ups).
Anywho, here are today's numbers:
Total Workout Time (BTB+RHC): 43:49
Average Heart Rate: 123bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 146bpm
Time in the Zone: Around 38 Minutes (There was a slight bridge between BTB + RHC with queuing to the right spot on my IPod)
The Quote for the Day that's in my head is one I saw from Yogi Bera: In Theory, there is no difference between Theory & Practice. In Practice, there is."
One way to look at it: You can talk and learn about different things you can do to improve yourself, your technique, etc. But, when you are actually in the scrum, making things work, pushing toward whatever goal you have, you have to have the flexibility to modify & make it your own.
The other way: Actions speak louder than words. By showing up and hitting the mat (whether it be Judo Yoga), you take one more step towards where you want to be! You will....

The Tuesday... a Step Up from Monday
Well.... today felt better than yesterday (which would not be a tough thing to accomplish considering the Snotwork Orange of Monday without the bowler hat and fake eyelash). The Ivan Kolov Cold is still trying to rattle in my chest, but its getting better!
I was able to get Energy done today, which (as the title suggests) is a Step Up from Monday.
Here are the Numbers
Total Workout Time: 23:16
Average Heart Rate: 115bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 144bpm
Total Time In Zone: Around 18 Minutes
Short 'n Sweet today for the Blog. Tomorrow is Fat Burner, Red Hot Core, Judo & DDP Radio (sans Sparky :C ). Whatever happens, I will be ready tomorrow to....

Sometimes The Only Way Out is Through
Sometimes The Only Way Out is Through
For those of you keeping track, Friday (or at least sometime this weekend) was supposed to be a
Double Black Diamond day. Well, that ended up being Sunday, which I'm not going to even put numbers up for, since Ivan Drago Cold that I alluded to on the last post came back for Round Two. As such, it was half-engaged, poorly balanced, and definitely not one of my best showings.
Other than getting myself through my Saturday in the office for Business Support, this weekend was Low Energy. As much as I have done (extra vegetable juicing, extra fluids, rest where needed), the Ivan Drago Cold was not going to be denied. It is in they Trying to Go Into My Chest While Gushing Out My Nose (pretty image, I know) phase.
Then, on one of my Breaks, I saw one of Christina Russell's #LoveNotes that she puts up where she talks about "Rest". I took that as a sign of what I needed to do. So, today, other than doing some free-form BANG Salutes and Wake-Up Stretches, I am putting it in Neutral for the day and going to bed early. By giving myself enough time to Rest & Heal, I can come back twice as hard to end this month Strong.
Remember, Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8. I know, some people say "Well, you can't get up more times than you fall down!". Yes you can, if you were Down in the first place, your choice to Stand Up counts as One. The point is, so long as you give a little bit more getting up than you took going down, you will get higher... stronger... faster..... BETTER!
We will, no matter what it takes....

The Thursday Post: Timing
The Thursday Post: Timing
Today was my scheduled day off of work. As my wife was up this morning before I was (more like was still awake from the night before, playing with antler-tips she got for possible jewelry pieces), I got to sleep-ion to try to get over this cold once and for all.
The cold has gone into the "Trying To Go Into the Chest" phase, which is always the most fun (insert sarcasm here)! I've been continuing doing the Kale,Lemon, Carrot & Ginger juicing to ramp up the natural defenses, along with keeping up with the water. I also have been sleeping on an incline to keep mucus from pooling in the lungs.
I was able to get Strength Builder done today. I was thinking of doing Strength Builder & Double Black Diamond today to catch up. However, with still getting over the cold and wanting to have enough for Kids Judo & Karate this evening, it was all about Timing and knowing when to push harder (ergo; working smarter). Timing is something that works itself into a lot of what we do, whether its when to engage in a workout, what workout tO
Everyone's timing is different, so its important to make it your own, just like everything else in DDP Yoga. So long as you keep moving forward and Own This Day (whatever you have for today), you will know which step you are ready to take tomorrow to get to your goal!
As for the numbers for today:
Total Workout Time: 40:28
Average Heart Rate: 129bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 152bpm
Time in the Zone: 37:20
Tomorrow, like it or not, is going to be Double Black Diamond. So, its time to hunker down and be ready for tomorrow to.....

Wednesday's Child.... would learning something from Sparky
Wednesday's Child.... would learning something from Sparky
So, another Wednesday as come and gone. Despite working through the tail-end of the Ivan Drago-esk cold (ask the "Ass-Kicking Alaskan" Josh McAdoo about that one), I was able to get through a few BANG Salutes & Red Hot Core this morning and Mixed Tape this evening before Judo. The only problem is, I didn't have the Heart Monitor on for either. However, from the sweat I was able to build up both times, I am going to take it I was either in my Zone or it was easier because Ivan was kicking it up there!
I also found out today that tonight's DDPRadio was going to be the last one with Eric "Sparky" Collier on it (at least for awhile). While I understand the reasoning behind it, his "stepping away from the mike" does make me a bit sad.
Sparky coined himself as "The Regular Guy". He was one of the first people to welcome me when I joined Team DDP Yoga. He has also put together some great challenges through the Warrior In Training Group, which I haven't missed attempting (key word "attempting") to push me forward and keep me challenged. Hearing his story and the way he talks about himself is something that I can really relate to. That right there, is the reason why Team DDP Yoga is such a great support site! There are a lot of people like him there for people to reach out to and get encouragement from.
When DDP chose him to be one of the people at the helm of DDP Radio, he did what he what he always does: recognize potential and encourage Sparky to find greatness in himself. That is what a great Teacher does. Sparky, in turn, has been able to take that & spread it to everyone that he has come in contact with.
I have no doubt that he will continue to do that. Its just going to be a little different (not bad, mind you!) to not hear Sparky on a weekly basis. But, I guess that's why the Internet's a thing, right?
Sparky, my DDP Yoga Brother, THANK YOU for being part of inspiring a gravel-voiced South Dakotan in pushing it to levels I couldn't have imagined. You definitely personify what I mean when I say...

Weekend Catch-Up & Starting a New Week
Weekend Catch-Up & Starting a New Week
I know that I missed a couple of days of blogging. I could say that fighting a cold tends to not let you think straight, but that would be an excuse.
However, even though I didn't blog, it doesn't mean I slacked off on the DDP Yoga work! It was a Diamond Cutter Saturday, followed by a 3 1/2 hour Judo/Karate/Jujustu training, finishing off with Red Hot Core. Here are the numbers:
Total Workout Time (Diamond Cutter): 52:30
Average Heart Rate: 136bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 152bpm'
Time in the Zone: 46:30
Total Workout Time (Red Hot Core): 14:40
Average Heart Rate: 118bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 132bpm
Time in the Zone: 12:30
Sunday was a combined Stand Up + Red Hot Core Workout.
Total Workout Time (Red Hot Core): 44:38
Average Heart Rate: 116bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 139bpm
Time in the Zone: 35:00 (approximately)
As far as the Cold I've been fighting goes, Saturday night was the worst of it. Fortunately, it was after all of my workouts & training. I was able to get through Sunday's stuff, but I didn't push as much hard as I could.
Today, I got up later than I wanted to. Therefore, I didn't get the Mixed Tape workout I had scheduled. I did have a good Jujutsu/Judo/Karate course this evening, but after training and last-minute stops before going home, getting Mixed Tape in today was not in the cards. But, as I keep saying "Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8". Since I don't have any other training tomorrow, I will see if I can make up Mixed Tape, Strength Builder and throw in a Red Hot Core in between.
Until tomorrow, True Believers....

Below The Belt, In The Zone
The First Friday of March is in the books! All in all, a good day to lay low, sleep in, and get some DDP Yoga in, of course! Here are the numbers:
Workout: Below The Belt+Red Hot Core
Total Workout Time: 41 Minutes 30 seconds
Note: When I combined the workout, instead of "Going Home" at the end of BTB, I went straight into RHC
Average Heart Rate: 125bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 147bpm
Time in the Zone: 38 Minutes
I've been hitting the KCGLA Juice (Kale, Carrot, Ginger, Lemon , Apple) a lot. When I did go out, I invested in a food processor so I can start doing more recipes I see from Christina Russell or Stacey Morris. There is also the KPL (Kale, Pineapple, Lime) Smoothies I'm seeing a lot about.
I also want to experiment with the leftover pulp I get from juicing (being one that hates wasting the leftovers). Stay tuned for how that turns out!
Short 'n Sweet today. Tomorrow is Diamond Cutter+Red Hot Core, then 3 1/2 hours of Judo, Jujutsu & Karate.

#DDPYNOREPEATS Momentum Day 2 & Notes on the Day
Today was Fatburner+Red Hot Core. After doing a long stretch of the longer workouts (Strength Builder, Diamond Cutter & Double Black Diamond), going back to the shorter end feels almost too short, if that makes sense.
However, knowing that lets me trying to turn up the intensity on engaging my muscles throughout. There have been some people just starting in DDP Yoga that have had questions on feeling that they are engaging enough, especially in the upper body.
My advise has been to get the feel for the engagement by going into Plank. Make sure that you are engaging your lower half while you're doing this to get the whole body involved. Notice, you are basically in Ignition position, only your are facing the floor. Rotate your hands (with the pressure on your palms) so that your fingers are pointing out instead of forward. Now, just like you pull your legs together without moving them, do that same thing with your arms in this position, fingers wide. This will give you a good idea on what to strive for when engaging in Ignition.

Guess What Day It Is?
Guess What Day It IS?
Since every day is #OwnThisDay, to quote Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
"IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT TODAY IS!"
So today was the start of the Warrior In Training March Challenge "No Repeats No Quitsies!!!" That means going through every workout in the Max Pack that I have in a row. Therefore, here's how my month is going to look from here forward:
Today: Energy+Red Hot Core
3/6: Fat Burner+Red Hot Core
3/7: Below The Belt+Red Hot Core
3/8: Diamond Cutter+Red Hot Core
3/9 Stand Up+Red Hot Core
3/10: Strength Builder+Red Hot Core
3/11: Mixed Tape+Red Hot Core (do you see a theme happening here?)
3/12: Double Black Diamond+Red Hot Core
...;.. then back to Energy+Red Hot Core and so on! #DDPYNOREPEAT
I didn't do Jujutsu/Judo like I normally would because I feel like I'm coming down with something. My wife & son both have been sniffling it up combined with stomach issues. Therefore, other than doing my DDP Yoga stuff, I didn't want to push myself any more than necessary. Remember, its knowing how to listen to your body, when to disengage & heal, and when to stomp on the gas & drive on!
While listening to DDP Radio tonight, I did a bit of prop work with some Kale,Carrot, Lemon, Celery & Ginger. I had some for tonight and made some for first thing tomorrow\ morning. I also added a half a tablespoon of Chia Seeds in each 16oz bottle for a little extra something.
Well then "Sweated?" CHECK "Blogged?" CHECK! Not its time to Sleep! See you all tomorrow!

Fighting Through a Monday
Well, in typical South Dakota Fighting Monday fashion, I got through a morning Fat Burner, got through -13 degree temperatures, 8 good hours of Business Technical Support, 1 1/2 hours of Jujutsu, 1 hour of Karate and topped it off with a Diamond Cutter. I did not do Red Hot Core with it, as I got my Core Workout at the beginning of Jujutsu, throwing in some Below The Belt positions along with our normal work.
This morning was 35 minutes of getting the heart going.
Average Heart Rate: 124bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 152bpm
Time in the Zone: 22 minutes
This evening's Diamond Cutter was challenging to keep the Heart Rate from blowing up too much;
Average Heart Rate: 139bpm
Maximum Heart Rate: 173bpm
Time in the Zone: 32 minutes.
Now, its time to eat some 3 Egg Garlic & Vegetable Scramble, then collapse and recover for a Tuesday full Below The Belt Morning.

Back in the Saddle Again
"Meant To" vs The Real Deal
It has been awhile (putting it lightly) since I posted anything up in the ZenTwister Blog. I keep telling myself that I need to start putting stuff up here to motivate myself and others. However, that goes right along side of meaning to exercise, eat right, read that book, do those chores.... you get the idea!
Don't get me wrong here, I have been being active doing my DDP Yoga and eating right, as there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I am going back to where I was physically. I've even posted videos up on the ZenTwister Channel, Posted & Shared on Facebook, called in (much to Robert's chagrin) to DDPRadio to give my two cent's worth, and so on. However, its all not the same as putting fingers to keyboard and keeping this blog up.
The same goes for any task, whether it means making good eating choices, doing DDP Yoga, getting the Certification tasks done. You can do all the little things around it that come along with it. But, its not the same as actually doing it. It is like when I ask my son about why he didn't get his homework done. He says "Well, I meant to (insert assignment or project here), but I forgot..." or "I got distracted and fee l really slow when I do it." Which I understand, since both my wife & I have struggled with some form of ADD since back when they really didn't have a name for it.
The good thing about having already documented what I have is... I get to see that I've answered my own question in one way or the other. In this case, it goes right back to what I put on a lot of my Facebook or YouTube posts.... "Own This Day".
"Own This Day" is to remind me that today, I need to make the best of today that I can. Its right up there with Live Life @ 90% & Own Your Life. It means that every day is a new chance to bring it and really prove that I can take it to the next level if I put the work into it.
